A Connected Devices Testbed for Insight Generation in Support of UK Industry

Abstract

With the proliferation of technology, information generated from connected devices - be they dumb or smart - are fast becoming the preferred way to derive insights about ever changing environments. This is true for intelligent manufacturing to farming where a multitude of information pieces need to come together in a cohesive manner - e.g., in farming, soil and irrigation status, and weather patterns may need to come together to create better farming strategies. However, typical devices ecosystems are proprietary, thus one needs to have an open and scalable framework where a multitude of devices can come to together in support of insight generation. Inspired by this observation, we at the Hartree Centre have been researching and developing open platforms so that UK industry can better evaluate the impact of such technologies in their organisations. In this paper, we discuss the vision of the research and its perceived impact in the UK industry. Furthermore, we discuss some proof of technology implementations from an intelligent mail box to connected gardens, and show how visualisation tools are brought together to better present the insights to the end consumer.
