A modular continuous system modeling program

Abstract

This paper describes a proposal for a continuous system modeling program (CSMP) which is structured in such a manner that its range of applicability may be extended at the option of the user. Any CSMP may be characterized by three properties: (1) the control mode which may be either batch or interactive, (2) the problem description language which may be either block or equation based, and (3) the execution mode which may be either direct or interpretive. Although historically various property options have been linked together, in the modular CSMP they are designed to be not only independent, but also not mutually exclusive. Thus, at execution time, the user may select the option which is best suited to the particular phase of the particular problem he is solving. Although a description of a complete system is given, the primary emphasis is placed upon the overall system organization and the interactive problem description languages.
