A Scheduling Technique for Bandwidth Allocation in Wireless Personal Communication Networks
Abstract
Future generation wireless personal communication networks (PCN) are expected to provide multimedia capable wireless extensions of fixed ATM/B-ISDN. This paper presents a scheduling technique for PCN based on TDMA and the leaky bucket regulator, the well known bandwidth enforcement mechanism for fixed ATM. The main objective of the proposed technique is to ensure fair and efficient treatment of various types of traffic on the air interface, including constant-bit-rate (CBR) voice and variable-bit-rate (VBR) video. Two alternative priority mechanisms are introduced and their performance is evaluated. The performance comparison of the alternatives reveals an interesting tradeoff between fairness and quality of service (QoS).
