Capturing and preparing images of Vatican library manuscripts for access via internet

Abstract

IBM is currently engaged in a pilot project, with the Vatican Library and the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio De Janeiro, that will provide access to 20,000 images of Vatican Library manuscripts to selected scholars worldwide. In the following, we describes the imaging challenges undertaken by this project and discuss the capture and image processing software developed to address those challenges.
