Abstract

The increased speed of local area networks, the emerging high speed applications, the multiplicity of subnetwork types and the variety of traffic classes promote the need for flexible high speed network systems. Fiber optic technology has matured to the point where such networks are being built to operate at speeds beyond one gigabit per second. Thus communication requirements for high-resolution graphics visualization and video applications as well as future needs for high speed backbone and distribution networks make it clear that the demand for LAN networks is but a matter of time.
