Experimental study of four-wave mixing on dispersion-shifted fiber and low dispersion fibers with a dense multiwavelength source

Abstract

In order to quantify the effects of four wave mixing (FWM) in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems, measurements were made in fibers having different zero-dispersion wavelength () and for different signal configurations. Measurements were made in continuous wave. Multichannel transmission with a .8-nm (100 GHz) spacing and a few mW power per channel induced FWM even with low dispersion fibers depending on the position of the λ0. The data gathered can predict the FWM induced in different configurations that are usually met in the type of WDM systems that are deployed today.
