Theory of peierls instability in tight-binding quasi one-dimensional solids

Abstract

The effect of short ranged Coulomb interaction on the Peierls dimerised state is examined and the existence of a new low temperature phase involving spin density wave formation in the Peierls state is shown. Thus the effect of charge and spin density waves associated with short range Coulomb interactions cannot be described by a renormalisation of the electron-phonon interaction. We observe that some recent attempts to describe the Peierls state in a half filled band are in fact a description of a quite different charge ordered state. © 1974.
