Will OLED displays challenge liquid crystal displays in notebook computer applications?

Abstract

In spite of impressive gains in organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology, many hurdles remain before OLED displays will challenge liquid crystal displays in notebook computer applications. Foremost is an increase in external quantum efficiency to at least 7.5% in conjunction with a fill factor of at least 65%. In addition, the red and blue points of the color gamut need to be improved for efficient and long-lived organic electroluminescent materials. Finally, an OLED display, as does any emissive display, faces special problems in avoiding ghost images in a windows environment. © 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.
