AltiVec extension to PowerPC accelerates media processing

Abstract

Major microprocessor vendors announced architecture extensions to their general-purpose processors in an effort to improve their multimedia performance. The most comprehensive of these extensions is PowerPC's AltiVec. Altivec speeds not only media processing but also nearly any application in which data parallelism exists. AltiVec is a single-instruction, multiple-data extension to a general-purpose architecture.
